Five Ways of Labeling that Hurts our Children

As a child, each time I was approached by someone to say that I am pretty, my response would usually be, "Thank you if you really think I am, but at home I knew I was the smartest one, not the pretty one." At the time, I was probably too young to realize that I've actually grew up being labeled at home.

It’s so easy to label our children: the brain, the athlete, the artist, etc. But, sometimes our attempts to classify limits them or discourages them.  I know of a very intelligent, successful grown man who still thinks he has a bad memory because his mom labeled him as the child who couldn’t remember things. Another mom I heard about was afraid to let her intelligence show in her family because her older sister was the academic one.

Kids hang onto every word their moms say.  Consequently, when we label our children, they often feel like they can’t break out of that label.  So, if you tell your child that he’s this or that, he’s going to take it to heart, even if you’re just making a casual observation.

So, avoid these 5 Ways Labeling Hurts Our Children.

1. They hear us label others, but not them.  Moms usually mean no harm when they do this, but it can stigmatize a sensitive child.  You’re talking about what a great job one of your kids is doing in school.  “She is doing so well,” you say.  “She got another awesome grade on her test.  She is just really smart.” As your other child listens, they infer that they are not the smart one.

2. We call them a name, they hear a label.  This is unintentional labeling.  Your kids are all outside playing when they start having races in the backyard. One of your kids loses every time.  You mean no harm, and your child is a good sport, so you say, “Hey, Slowpoke!  You look like a turtle out there!” Of course, you meant it all in fun, but your child has just heard a label he’ll likely remember.  If you’ve done this before, or the next time you do it, apologize right away and reassure your child that he is not the label.

3. You label in anger.  Even the most caring mom can snap and say something she shouldn’t.  You’re tired, you’re frustrated, and you’re tired of seeing your child’s room look like a disaster area.  I had to admit I am sometimes guilty of this thing. So the words come flying out of your mouth, “This room is disgusting!  You are so lazy!”  Your child’s room may be a mess.  Your child may have lazy tendencies, but bringing up those challenges in anger is a negative approach.

4. You put your labels on them. One mom told her son, “Oh, you have a bad memory, just like me.”  That child went through college and medical school thinking he had a poor memory, even though reality showed he didn’t.  So when you make an observation about yourself, don’t inadvertently lump them in with you.

5. Your labels feel like pressure.  You may think that labeling your child as the best student in his class, or the fastest runner on his team might motivate him, but it can actually feel like pressure.  What if he gets a bad grade or isn’t the fastest runner?  Labeling him as such sets him up to feel like he’s let you down when he doesn’t live up to your label.

Max's Restaurant Supports Gilas Pilipinas National Basketball Team to World FIBA 2014: #PusoToTheMax

Max's Restaurant had always been proud to be a global Filipino brand and therefore has shown its full support towards Filipinos' excellence in every field there is. Selected bloggers were invited last May 19 for a surprise meet up Max's Restaurant had for them. So there we were, we felt like grade school kids on a huge bus awaiting whatever surprise the much-loved restaurant had in store for us all. But it is obvious from the looks on our faces how excited we were. Some were even anticipating, could it be a special meet up Max's Restaurant has arranged with its brand ambassador and endorser Coco Martin? But then, why do we have to go to the Meralco compound in Ortigas?

The biggest reveal came when we stepped on the bus in front of the Meralco gym where we were welcomed by Max's Restaurant Brand Manager Mr. Bobby Simborio. We were immediately given the official Max's Restaurant's #PusoToTheMax shirt--with the National Team Gilas Pilipinas players' signatures on the said shirt's back. Max's Restaurant is one of the official sponsors of Gilas Pilipinas National Team as they compete in the World FIBA Cup 2014 in Spain.

It was an opportunity for us to get to know the players of the national team before they practice. We were given a few minutes to take photos with them, and to be honest, it really felt like everyone seemed to be in a #fangirl mode. We've met popular basketball coaches Norman Black and Chot Reyes. I've seen Norman Black before when my beloved Kyle attended Batang PBA Basketball Sessions before. But it's my first time to have a photo taken with him. We also got to meet other members of the Gilas Pilipinas National Team such as Barangay Ginebra's Japeth Aguilar and L.A. Tenorio, Rain or Shine's Paul Lee and Beau Belga, Gabe Norwood, Jeff Chan, Meralco Bolts' Gary David, Talk n' Text's Larry Fonacier and  Jayson
Castro, etc...
The Ateneo De Manila High School Basketball Team

Too bad, according to the organizers, one of the more popular players Marc Pingris has sore eyes so he was not present during that night. But hopefully, we could have another opportunity perhaps to see him in person soon in the future. Even the entire Ateneo De Manila High School Basketball campers were there to give the team the support that they need.

Towering basketball guy, Japeth Aguilar made me look like a fat dwarf.

The Purple Plum Fairy with Coach Norman Black

The entire Max's Restaurant executives, officers and personnel came to show their support to the entire members of Gilas Pilipinas National Team as they make their bout and carry the country's colors in the upcoming World FIBA Cup in Spain. With the official Max's Restaurant hashtag #PusoToTheMax, it really takes a lot of fighting heart to go forth and shine in the World FIBA, but with companies like Max's Restaurant at the helm, ready to support the Philippine National Team who call themselves "Gilas Pilipinas", win or lose, they will still be winners in the eyes of many simply by making it there--qualifying for the World FIBA Championship in Spain alone already makes them winners in their own rights.

So go forth, Team Philippines! Good luck in your future games. May you guys bring home the bacon!

Special thanks to Max's Restaurant for the opportunity to meet the Gilas Pilipinas coaches and team members.

Ways to Get that Perfect Smile and be confident!

Everyone wants to achieve a perfect smile especially when you see celebrities smile confidently. We tend to believe that to get that picture perfect smile we have to opt for corrective dental procedures and go for teeth whitening sessions. Here are 20 ways to get that perfect smile and maintain it, without burning a hole in your pocket from your friendly folks at Green Apple Dental Clinic/MRC Clinics.

1. Lighten up
Brushing daily with toothpaste that contains baking soda helps in maintaining the whiteness. It will always build up your confidence in maintaining the perfect smile.

2. Get gorgeous gums
Your gums are at focus every time you smile and so to keep them pink you should use whitening floss, following up with a quick gargle of brightening.

3. Eat fibrous foods:
Fibrous foods like apples and carrots have an exfoliating effect and help remove surface stains which help in maintaining the whiteness of your teeth and in turn enhances your smile

4. Check your cracks
Grinding teeth can also be a major cause of cracked teeth. Consult your dentist to determine if you are clenching or grinding your teeth, and if you could benefit from a protective thin night guard.

5. Fill the spaces
Spaces between the edges of the teeth are unattractive and might ruin the smile. People view your smile and dark spaces can be disturbing to the eye. Therefore consider cosmetic dental bonding to close spaces and enhance your Smile.

6. Protect your teeth and gums
Getting your teeth and gums camera-ready requires a bit of behind-the-scenes preparation. Correct cracked, broken, or missing teeth by visiting a dentist on regular intervals.

7. Replace missing teeth
Missing Teeth limits you from Smiling whole heartedly. The most obvious form of dental neglect is a missing tooth, as it instantly draws somebody's attention to the mouth. So it is advisable to replace the missing teeth and smile the way you want.

8. Whiten your teeth
Teeth get stained by either chewing tobacco or due to old age or hereditary. Discoloration is expected for most of us who smoke, drink lots of tea and coffee leading to a dull smile that's lost its radiance. Whitening strips or laser treatment aids in whitening your teeth. This encourages you to smile brighter and bigger.

9. Eat fruits & vegetables
Fruits and vegetables, along with a balanced diet, have been noted for decreasing tooth decay and promoting oral health. A number of fruits and vegetables are good sources for vitamin C, some contain iron and calcium, and they don't contain added sugars. Fruits and vegetables are also composed mostly of water, and it provides a moist environment that is not conducive to bacterial growth.

10.Safeguard your mouth
Do not neglect dental check-ups, loose tooth, sensitivity or pain in your gums. It is very important to keep a check on all of them. Brushing can also help prevent decay.

11. Flossing
Proper flossing removes plaque and food particles in places where a toothbrush cannot easily reach, under the gum line and between your teeth. Building up of plague can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, hence daily flossing is very essential.

12. Eat healthy
Eating high sugar content or high calorie food can lead to decay in the teeth. Brushing or rinsing your mouth with water is essential to maintain the structure of your teeth and moreover your smile.

13. Avoid aerated drinks
Aerated drinks and even diet drinks have many acids that can over a period of time, cause loss of tooth making the enamel weak and more acceptable to decay which leads to imperfect smile.

14. Say no to smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco
These habits lead to risk of oral cancers. Smoking and chewing tobacco can also have adverse effects on your teeth like discolouring your teeth and bad breath.

15. Chewing sugar free gum
Using sugar free gums can help in removing bacteria and germs from your teeth. They are proven to be helpful in prevention of decay which in turn leads to maintaining the perfect smile.

16. Avoid eating between the meals
The cakes, chocolates, junk and other sugary foods that we eat between meals can cause tooth decay. Some sugary foods have a lot of fat in them.

17. Brush your tongue
Sometimes bad breath can be a major problem and so your tongue that actually forms a layer of its own bacteria must be checked and taken care of. . It does a great deal in helping to reduce overall oral bacteria and maintain oral hygiene.

18. Avoid oral piercing
Oral Piercing often leads to pain, swelling, infection, increased flow of saliva, and injury to the gums and due to all of this it plunders our smile.

19. Check your diabetes:
If you have diabetes, you have a greater risk of developing certain oral health problems .Controlling blood sugar levels can reduce the risk of these effects and in turn will help maintain your perfect smile.

20. Sleep well
A good sleep relaxes your mind and body. It naturally makes you feel good and hence boosts your smile.

Herbcare's Glucosamine Max and Wheatgrass Max Dietary Supplement Review

I have heard of the power of wheatgrass before and I have tried it myself. But I guess I'm someone who'd seriously take that as a way to detoxify and not as daily juice intake. I've been given the chance to review two products from Herbcare Center: Glucosamine Max (a once-a-day nutritional powder drink) that promotes healthier joints and WheatgrassMax (a food supplement that improves power and stamina). Of course, getting to know the immense benefits of both products is something new to me and thus served as a 'challenge' for me especially since wheatgrass now enjoys a certain degree of popularity to the extent that it is now a way of life among health and fitness enthusiasts.

The deep green Wheatgrass powder in WheatgrassMax contains a number of important nutrients such as high percentages of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, chlorophyll and insoluble fiber are available in the natural synergistic form that makes it a complete food that the body requires daily to enhance power and stamina.

Wheatgrass Max also has high amino acid content that includes Leucine that promotes the healing of muscle tissue, skin, and bones as well as aids in increasing growth hormone production. It is also beneficial for those who'd want to look sexier as it also includes Methionine which is a powerful anti-oxidant that assists in the breakdown of fats and prevents fat build-up while Valine is also needed for muscle metabolism and coordination, tissue repair, and for the maintenance of proper nitrogen in the body. Apart from all these benefits, WheatgrassMax is also packed with Vitamin C, E, and K, biotin, choline, lycopene, beta-carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, folic acid, calcium, cobalt, copper, alanine and arginine.

The taste? It's 100% organic so it tastes exactly just the way it should be. The deep green color and aroma indicates the fresh wheatgrass made into powder form. One teaspoon of wheatgrass is equivalent to an entire spinach salad weighing a full 50 grams. I'm no fan of veggies especially the leafy ones but WheatgrassMax enables me to have nutrient-rick boosters in a juice form for an easier digest. Loaded with essential vitamins and micro-nutrients equivalent to a week's vegetable consumption of an average person, WheatgrassMax is perfect for athletes and those who lead an active lifestyle because it will surely give them a steady supply of energy.

As for the other product, GlucosamineMax, it tasted like an oral rehydration salt when you drink it as it is or a buko juice (young coconut juice). But then, you can dissolve it in juices or any beverage drink that you want if you'd rather not take it as it is. GlucosamineMx is a dietary supplement which aims to prevent joint pain and early degeneration of the joint cartilage. Studies have shown that Glucosamine Sulfate helps maintain healthier joint cartilage and rehabilitate damaged cartilage to regain pain-free joint mobility.

I'm not getting any younger, I'm also overweight so both makes me prone to joint pain. As we age, our body's natural production of natural glucosamine slows down. This leads to the thinning of the joint cartilage and loss of its flexibility to cushion joint movements. The way to treat joint pain is to get rid of its symptoms through lifestyle modification, proper exercise, manual therapy, painkillers and Glucosamine Sulfate dietary supplements.

As most of my friends know, my Mom and I had recently met an accident which caused her to have partial hip replacement. She's now recuperating and hopefully will soon start her rehabilitation so she can walk again. She's been taking GlucosamineMax as part of her rehabilitation to help restore joint cartilage back to health and retards progression of damage to joints.

Herbcare's WheatgrassMax and Glucosamine Max are available in leading drugstores nationwide. For more info, please log on to www.hearbcare.com.ph or email them at info@herbcare.com.ph
